Motivation is the force that propels you into repeating a behaviour for some kind of reward. There are three different types of motivation; Extrinsic (an activity that earns a separable outcome, like working to earn a pay check or exercising to lose weight), Intrinsic (doing something that makes you feel good or gives you a sense of purpose, like helping a stranger carry their groceries or going for a walk because you enjoy it) and Family (being motivated by the desire to provide for your family and loved ones.) Motivation is the thing that pushes you to get up every morning instead of being idle for long periods and it can ebb and flow like many things in life.
