VI - THE LOVERS
Upright Meaning: Passion, temptation, attraction, relationships, balance, making choices, staying true to oneself, major decisions, values in alignment.
Represents: A choice between two loves.
Reversed: Gemini. Open-minded, inquisitive, outgoing, versatile, business, transport.
Ages: Twenty-four to twenty-seven. Major decisions, making choices.

Today we are taking a closer look at 6 – The Lovers. The Lovers represent passion, temptation, and relationships. When the Lovers appear in your spread it’s time to take a look at the relationships in your life and ensure you have balance and are staying true to yourself. Often when people see the Lovers in their spread they see it as a positive, lovey card, but that’s not necessarily the case every time… the Lovers card in the traditional Rider-Waite deck shows a man and a woman under the eyes of a spirit in the sky, and I have recreated that in my Lovers card with a cat and two mice (removing the genders of the two lovers cuz they could be any combination of people, duh.) The cat is watching over them and can represent forces at work within your relationships that are out of your control, or are controlling you. Balance is key here; the downside of the Lovers could be co-dependency, toxic relationships/friendships, and lack of control over your circumstances. This card wants you to look closely at your relationships and reflect on whether you feel they are organic, healthy, and loving, or if there are darker forces at work.
The reverse side of the Lovers is Gemini, the Twins. Gemini is an Air sign ruled by Mercury in the Third house. The Air element represents awareness, decisions, and knowledge, and both the Third House and the Gemini sign are about communication. Communication is pretty key in relationships, right? Mercury is all about logic, reason, and receiving messages. Gemini wants you to really use your brain and think about your communication style and how that can affect your relationships. Be reasonable. Look at things subjectively or ask a friend for help if you feel like you have a lack of control or clear perspective. Gemini reminds you to be open-minded and outgoing, but remain inquisitive. This could be a prompt to be more open with your partner(s) and ensure you have healthy communication free of abuse or neglect. Ensure you are having your needs met, and if they aren’t then there’s some communication that needs to happen there. On the flip side if everything is hunky dory then embrace it all, continue to be open with your partner(s) and aware of your needs and theirs, and think of some ways you can do something kind for them today.
If anyone has any doubts about the relationship(s) they are in I definitely encourage them to reach out and communicate that with other people, and not just their partner(s) who may talk them out of it or become angry or despondent. Familiarize yourself with gaslighting (being manipulated by psychological means into questioning your own sanity, eg approaching a partner about behaviours that bother you and them completely shutting it down and telling you that you are wrong and/or there are no problems/it’s all in your head, or being made to feel the choices you make are wrong if your partner doesn’t agree or want you to have that freedom.) It is a real thing and should be taken seriously. If you or anyone you know is in an abusive relationship please speak up and get help.
