Philanthropy is essentially love of humanity. It is similar to charity but more about addressing the root cause of a problem (systematic oppression) rather than just treating the symptoms (hunger, poverty, disease). Charity gives a man a fish to feed him for a night, philanthropy teaches a man to fish to feed him for a lifetime. It is often practised in the form of financial donations by private citizens to non-profit organizations benefiting the community and for the good of the public. It may not always be possible to donate money to charitable causes but it is usually possible to donate time and/or needed items to others. Sharing wealth and success is a solid way of cultivating integrity for yourself and dignity for others. Familiarize yourself with the non-profits operating in your community and what they stand for, then get involved!
